A Small Craft Warning and High Surf Advisory for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will be in effect from 6:00 p.m Monday 4th September, 2017 through to 6:00 a.m Wednesday 6th September, 2017.
A Small-Craft Warning means in this case that seas equal to or greater than 3m (10ft) are already affecting or are expected to affect the marine area.
A High-Surf Advisory is issued when breaking wave action poses or is expected to pose a threat to life and property within the surf zone.
At 2:00p.m, the eye of the Hurricane “Irma” was centered near 16.7°N, 53.8°W or about 530 MI...850 KM east of the Leeward Islands. Irma was moving towards the west-southwest at about 14 mph...22km/h, with a gradual turn towards the west expected later Monday 4 th September orin the night, and then towards the west-northwest by Tuesday 5 th September. The centre of Irma is expected to pass across the extreme northern Leewards Islands late tomorrow/early Wednesday morning. Although “Irma” is not expected to directly impact Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, outer rainbands from the system are likely to bring some isolated pockets of moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms along with occasional gusty winds across the islands from beyond midnight today, Tuesday and persisting into Wednesday.
Rainfall accumulations of up to one (1) inch (25millimeters) with isolated higher amounts are possible. Some flash- flooding and land slippage is possible in low-lying areas. Thus, residents are urged to be on the alert and take all necessary precautions.
Large northerly to north-easterly swells of at least 3.0m to 3.5m (10 to 12ft) are also forecast to start affecting the island from early Tuesday into early Wednesday morning. As a consequence, a high- surf advisory and small craft warning will be in effect for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
