Professionals from the various sectors throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines who collect and analyse damage assessment data and information following the impact of a hazard, is participating in a Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA), Workshop this week.

This four-day workshop commenced on Monday 22nd June and is being conducted by the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), with support from the UNDP Barbados, the OECS and the Global Fund for Disaster Risk Reduction (GFDRR).

The PDNA is a joint process to provide co-ordinated assistance in assessing the socio-economic consequences of disasters and support the development of recovery strategies. This methodology was used in St. Vincent and the Grenadines following the Christmas 2013 low trough rainfall event.

The main objectives of the workshop are to train a cadre of persons in PDNA, to build capacity at the national level to deliver future training, and to improve our readiness to conduct PDNA following the impact of a hazard in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

It is the first of a series of training workshops in PDNA to be conducted in six other countries in the region beside St. Vincent and the Grenadines. These countries includes: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Saint Lucia.

The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Asha Kambon, Lead PDNA Trainer; Dr. Vincent Little, Sector Specialist Agriculture; and PDNA Trainer, Ms. Michelle Forbes - Deputy Director of NEMO, Mr. Brent Bailey, Chief Engineer, Ministry of Transport and Works, etc.; and Ms. Anneke Wilson, Country Program Specialist for the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Workshop takes place at NEMO’s Conference Room, Old Montrose, beginning 8:30 a.m. each day.
